Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association

Pursuing excellence in the educational journey of our advanced learners

July 2, 2020 Update: The Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association has become an inactive organization until a new leadership team emerges in the future to carry forth its mission.  If you are a Shoreline parent who desires to connect with other parents of Highly Capable students in the community, please go to Facebook, where we have a private group and a public page.  If you are interested in leadership opportunities, please contact the group's founders via email:  shoreline.hicap.advocacy@gmail.com. Thanks for stopping by!

A Special Message to Our Community:

Before our organization bids farewell . . .

As this academic year closes out on June 19, we are also observing the end of our current leadership team with the Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association (SHCPA).  We are each embarking onto new opportunities, both personally and within our community.  The past four years have truly been a remarkable time of new connections and personal growth for us as advocates of Highly Capable education.  THANK YOU to those who have attended our speaker events, supported our work as volunteers, and who have advocated on behalf of our students.
We are incredibly proud of the achievements and growth of SHCPA during this time!  They have included:
  • Highlighting guest speakers from the Northwest Gifted Child Assn and UW Robinson Center
  • Partnering with the Shoreline Special Needs PTSA (2018’s Anxiety Forum and 2019’s 2e2 movie event)
  • Hosting our first school board candidate forum in October 2019
Since last October, we have highlighted the need in our communications for new leaders; unfortunately, no volunteers have stepped up to carry our objectives forward.  Therefore, our Facebook group/page, website and newsletter will be going “dark" when school ends next month. Without volunteers to lead our organization, we will need to cease our work.

If you wish to see SCHPA continue, please contact us before June 19 at:  shoreline.hicap.advocacy@gmail.com.  Your participation in any way possible will be vital in keeping our Highly Capable students and families in Shoreline connected through communication, advocacy and education.

Please refer to a brief Q&A that may address your general questions about SHCPA’s situation at this time.

With appreciation,
Linda Tsai, Missy Liu, Megan Menis and Mary Kate Horwood

Community Events:

CALL TO ACTION!!
Many of you are aware that the district is conducting a re-examination of Highly Capable (Hi Cap) magnet service at Ridgecrest (RC) Elementary.  The next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, 3/16/20 so time is short.  Read the reasons why in the document called "advocating_effectively_for_gifted_education_--_what_to_say_and_why" on the top right of our resources HERE.

What we need you to DO:

  1. WRITE NOW TO YOUR SCHOOL BOARD DIRECTOR TO REINSTATE RC HI CAP. (a sample email may be found in the document linked above)
  2. ATTEND THE NEXT SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON MONDAY, MARCH 16.

Is Hi-Cap right for your Family?

Due to varying circumstances, it is with regret that the Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association (SHCPA) has decided to postpone our “Is Hi Cap Right for You?” panel on Wednesday, March 4, at Meridian Park Elementary.  We have not come to this decision lightly.  Although the Shoreline school district has not yet announced any changes to its scheduled programming, we feel that it is best for us to err on the side of caution.  We apologize for any inconvenience.
Regards,
Shoreline Hi Cap Parent Association leadership team

About Ms. Holland – Marcia Holland has been involved in supporting excellence in education for children since her sons were students in the Renton School District in the 1970s and 1980s. Marcia has served on the board of the Northwest Gifted Child Association on and off over the last 30 years. Her focus has always been educating others – parents, educators, administrators and legislators – about the unique learning needs of children who learn at markedly faster and more complex rates than their chronological peers. Having been an unserved gifted child herself, she remembers the sense of frustration, isolation and “marching in place” of her K-12 experience.

Parent Survey Results (June 2019)

Your voices matter!  Thank you to the Shoreline parents and community members who participated in our second annual survey.  You have helped us to fine tune our objectives and focus as a parent group.  The top three priorities are:  1) expand Hi Cap advocacy at district and/or state level, 2) provide parent education events, and 3) recommend gifted resources for parents.

•Why should we advocate for gifted education?

The Washington State Constitution states: “It is the paramount duty of the state to make ample provision for the education of all children residing within its borders.”

•Why are gifted programs needed?

Gifted and talented students and those with high abilities need gifted education programs that will challenge them in regular classroom settings and enrichment and accelerated programs to enable them to make continuous progress in school.
